The Chilli Pickle is an award-winning Indian restaurant and take-away in the heart of Brighton. Run by Alun and Dawn Sperring, the restaurant has been named amongst the top 100 UK restaurants 2011-2016 at the National Restaurant Awards. Other awards include the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2010-2017, British Curry Awards 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 and Brighton’s Top 20 Restaurants.

Accessibility & expertise

Alun and Dawn were seeking to raise funding to open additional restaurants in the South of England. They selected Growthdeck because of its unique blend of accessibility to capital and cross-sector expertise. Growthdeck’s platform enabled many of The Chilli Pickle’s long-standing patrons to invest themselves, with individual commitments ranging from £1,000 to £150,000. In the end, 50 investors contributed to a capped fundraise of £700,000. Kevin Bacon, the Growthdeck sector expert for Food & Beverages and co-founder of Frankie & Benny’s, was enlisted to work with Alun and Dawn in focusing their expansion strategy and has been appointed to the The Chilli Pickle board.


Fastest fundraise

The fundraise for The Chilli Pickle has been the fastest Growthdeck campaign to date - reaching its target in under four weeks. As part of the promotional activity, Growthdeck arranged an intimate 'Meet the Management' lunch, with food provided by The Chilli Pickle themselves, at which investors were able to speak directly to Alun about the expansion plans. In addition, Alun presented at Growthdeck's 'Investing in Food & Beverages' event, which was attended by over 75 delegates.

A comprehensive campaign of direct communication with investors, press coverage, social media and digital advertising was carried out both pre and post launch of the campaign. The investment opportunity was viewed online over 4,000 times.
